Pumpkin Patch

Some years we don’t get much fall color in Oakland, but this year there’s a lovely spray of orange and red foliage outside my window. I know it’s not much by New England standards, but it seems special to me.

On our recent trip to Illinois, though, we experienced full seasonal flavor visiting a pumpkin farm with family. It was about 80 degrees when we were there (which didn’t exactly scream “fall”) but the colors were perfect.

And then, of course, there was the Haunted Forest, complete with creepy animatronic old men, skeletons, and smoking coffins. It wasn’t as scary as Universal Studios, where the monsters and ghouls are played by real people, but the walk did have its startling moments, thanks to motion sensors and the fact that we were alone in the woods near dusk.

At least this time I didn’t run screaming face-first into a wall. But that’s another story … BOO!
