Crawpocalypse 2012

2012: Year of the Crawpocalypse!

On Saturday, we attended our friends’ fourth annual crawfish boil. This is a funny thing to pull off in Berkeley, California, since the “mudbugs” have to be flown in from Louisiana, but we manage with the help of an experienced Southerner.

According to our chef, when compared with her hometown crew, our west-coast team eats too little, too slowly, and with too many “sides.” And since we’re in the Bay Area, we always have a few vegetarians and vegans in the group. The concept of vegans attending an eating event where the main course is live-boiled crustaceans apparently would not wash back home where the crawdads live. But it’s the norm here, so of course there were salads, vegetarian biscuits and gravy, as well as a vegan pie. All delicious.

Here’s a gallery of pics from the day. It’s a lot of work to prepare and eat crawfish, but the effort was worth it.
